Best Months to Move in Houston (and the Ones to Dodge)

By Big Heart Moving · February 20, 2026

Picking your moving date in Houston is about more than the price. Get it wrong and you are loading on a day when the back of the truck hits 140 degrees and your candles fuse to the couch cushions before you reach the new place.

Houston summer moving day in action

The Months to Avoid (If You Can)

June through August is peak season everywhere, but Houston in summer is its own kind of rough. Afternoons park above 95 with a heat index over 105, and a closed-up truck climbs to 130 or 140 inside within the hour. Hard on your stuff, harder on the crew.

If summer is unavoidable: book a 7 AM start and plan for the crew to take a few heat breaks. Have cold water, Gatorade, and a fan ready. Look after the movers in July and the whole job goes faster.

Hurricane Season: June Through November

We are only about 50 miles off the Gulf, and August through October is when the tropics get busy. A real storm can close freeways, drop power for days, and seal off whole neighborhoods, so keep one eye on the forecast if you are moving in that stretch.

The Window Worth Targeting: Late September Into Early December

If you can pick, October and November are the sweet spot. The worst heat is gone, the tropics are quieting down, and the summer rush is over, which means more open dates and better pricing.

School Calendar Considerations

When the big Houston-area districts go back, roughly:

  1. Houston ISD — an August return that packs July
  2. Katy ISD — an August return, with west Houston peaking in July
  3. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD — an August return that pulls the northwest corridor
  4. Fort Bend ISD — an August return behind the Sugar Land and Missouri City rush
  5. Conroe ISD — an August return that fuels the Woodlands and Spring

Day-of-Week Pricing Comparison

Day Demand Level Pricing Impact
Monday Low Standard rate
Tuesday – Wednesday Lowest 10-18% discount typical
Thursday Medium Standard rate
Friday High Premium
Saturday Highest Premium
Sunday Medium Standard (some buildings restrict)
1st of month Highest Surge pricing

A Tuesday or Wednesday in the middle of the month is almost always the cheapest day to move. We can usually knock 10 to 18 percent off for a midweek slot.
